Ingredients

Scale

Rice and Butter

  • 1 1/2 cups cooked short grain rice (or cooked jasmine rice)
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter

Egg and Oil

  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp vegetable oil (or any neutral oil)

Seasonings and Garnishes

  • 1/2 tsp toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp regular soy sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp green onion, finely chopped

Optional Toppings

  • kimchi
  • canned tuna
  • roasted seaweed flakes
  • avocado
  • sauteed carrots, spinach, or zucchini
  • additional protein of choice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rice: Mix hot cooked rice with unsalted butter until well combined. If using leftover rice, microwave it covered for 2-3 minutes until hot. To make freshly cooked rice, follow proper steaming or rice cooker instructions for short grain or jasmine rice. Transfer the buttered rice to a large serving bowl for easy mixing and eating.
  2. Fry the Egg: Heat vegetable oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Fry the egg sunny side up, over-easy, or to your preferred doneness. For sunny side up, cook until the egg whites are nearly set but yolk remains runny, spooning hot oil over the whites to help them set faster.
  3. Assemble the Dish: Place the fried egg on top of the buttered rice in the serving bowl.
  4. Add Seasonings: Garnish with toasted sesame seeds, drizzle toasted sesame oil, sprinkle chopped green onions, and add soy sauce to taste. Adjust the amount of soy sauce and sesame oil based on your preference.
  5. Mix and Serve: Break up the egg and mix all the ingredients together thoroughly until combined. Enjoy immediately while hot, optionally garnished with your choice of additional toppings like kimchi or avocado for extra flavor and texture.

Notes

  • To cook fresh short grain or jasmine rice: Rinse 1 cup of rice under cold water until water runs clear. Combine with 1¼ cups water in a rice cooker or pot. Cook according to rice cooker instructions or bring to boil on stovetop then simmer covered for 15 minutes, then let stand off heat for 10 minutes before fluffing.
  • If using refrigerated leftover rice, reheat thoroughly as described to ensure it’s heated through and soft for best texture.
  • You can customize this dish by adding protein options like canned tuna or vegetables like sautéed spinach or zucchini for a heartier meal.
  • Adjust amount of soy sauce and sesame oil to suit dietary preferences or sodium intake.
  • For a healthier version, use less butter or substitute with olive oil and opt for low-sodium soy sauce.
