Ingredients

Scale

For the Tuna and Marinade

  • 2 tuna steaks
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds (divided)
  • Green onion, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, sesame oil, ground ginger, soy sauce, garlic powder, rice vinegar, and half of the sesame seeds to create a flavorful marinade.
  2. Marinate the Tuna: Pour half of the marinade over the tuna steaks, ensuring they are evenly coated. Reserve the other half of the marinade for later use. Cover the tuna and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes or up to overnight to let the flavors infuse.
  3. Preheat the Grill: Heat the grill to medium-high heat, approximately 350°F, preparing it for searing the tuna steaks.
  4. Coat the Tuna: Remove the tuna from the marinade and discard any excess liquid. Coat each tuna steak with about 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds, pressing gently to create a crust on the exterior.
  5. Grill the Tuna: Place the tuna steaks on the hot grill. Cook each side for 2 to 3 minutes, basting occasionally with the reserved marinade. Aim for an internal temperature of 135°F for medium-rare; for well-done, cook until 145°F according to FDA guidelines.
  6. Serve & Enjoy: Remove the tuna from the grill and top with the remaining reserved sauce. Garnish with sliced green onions and additional sesame seeds for extra flavor and presentation. Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • Marinating time can be extended overnight to intensify flavors.
  • Using a meat thermometer helps achieve the perfect doneness level.
  • Serve with steamed rice or a fresh Asian slaw for a complete meal.
  • If you don’t have a grill, tuna steaks can also be cooked on a stovetop skillet at medium-high heat.
  • Adjust sesame seeds quantity based on preference for crust thickness.
