Ingredients

Scale

Onion Buns

  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp Tony Chachere’s Creole seasoning (or preferred seasoning)
  • 1/2 tsp brown sugar

Burger Patties

  • 12 oz 80/20 ground beef
  • 1/2 tbsp Tony Chachere’s Creole seasoning (or preferred seasoning)
  • 4 slices American cheese

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp relish
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp Tony Chachere’s Creole seasoning
  • Cayenne pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onion Bun: Peel the large yellow onion and slice it into four thick rounds about 1/2-inch each. Drizzle each slice with olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, a pinch of Creole seasoning, and brown sugar to enhance caramelization.
  2. Caramelize the Onion Slices: Heat a pan over medium-low heat and place the onion slices inside. Slowly cook for about 10 minutes on each side until the onions turn deeply browned and tender all the way through. Remove and set aside.
  3. Make the Burger Patties: In a mixing bowl, thoroughly season the ground beef with Creole seasoning. Divide the meat into four equal portions and roll each into a ball. Flatten each ball to form thin patties.
  4. Cook the Patties: Heat a pan over medium-high heat. Sear each patty for 2-3 minutes per side, allowing a nice crust to form and the burger to cook through.
  5. Add Cheese: When the patties are nearly fully cooked, place a slice of American cheese on each one. Let the cheese melt completely before removing the patties from heat.
  6. Prepare the Sauce: In a bowl, mix mayonnaise, relish, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, Creole seasoning, and cayenne pepper. Whisk until smooth and combined.
  7. Assemble the Burgers: Lay one caramelized onion slice on a plate as the base bun. Place a cheesy burger patty on top, spoon a generous amount of sauce over it, then cap it with another onion slice acting as the top bun. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
  8. Serve: Serve the assembled onion burgers immediately with extra sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy your flavorful Flying Dutchman Burger!

Notes

  • The caramelized onion buns provide a low-carb alternative to traditional burger buns.
  • Use 80/20 ground beef for juicy, flavorful patties.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper in the sauce for preferred spice level.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the contrast of warm patties and tender onion buns.
  • Pairs well with simple sides like a fresh salad or roasted vegetables.
