4.1 from 24 reviews

Sweet, golden brown caramelized banana slices made by cooking ripe bananas in butter and sugar until beautifully caramelized, perfect as a quick dessert or a delicious topping for pancakes and ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale

Bananas

  • 2 large, ripe (but still firm) bananas

Caramel Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
  • Optional: A pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg
  • Optional: A tiny splash of vanilla extract
  • Optional: A tiny pinch of salt (if using unsalted butter)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bananas: Peel the bananas and slice them into ½-inch thick rounds. Ensure slices are not too thin to avoid mushiness and not too thick for even cooking.
  2. Melt the Butter: Heat a non-stick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium heat. Add butter and let it melt fully, swirling to coat the pan. Wait until butter is foamy but not browned.
  3. Add Sugar and Optional Spices: Sprinkle sugar evenly over the melted butter. Add cinnamon or nutmeg now if using. Stir gently for 30 seconds to 1 minute until sugar dissolves and forms a syrupy base.
  4. Arrange Banana Slices: Place banana slices in a single layer without overcrowding. Cook in batches if necessary to ensure even caramelization.
  5. Cook the First Side: Let slices cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes until golden brown and edges caramelize. Watch for bubbling sugar mixture.
  6. Flip and Cook the Second Side: Carefully flip slices using a thin spatula or tongs. Cook the other side for 1-2 minutes until also golden brown and sauce thickens to caramel consistency.
  7. Add Optional Vanilla: Remove pan from heat and stir in vanilla extract if using. Residual heat will blend the flavor perfectly.
  8. Serve Immediately: Transfer caramelized banana slices with sauce to a plate or serve on top of your favorite dishes. Best enjoyed warm.

Notes

  • Use ripe but firm bananas for ideal texture and sweetness.
  • If bananas are very ripe, consider reducing sugar slightly as natural sweetness may be higher.
  • You can substitute brown sugar for a richer, molasses flavor.
  • Cook in batches to avoid overcrowding and ensure even caramelization.
  • Serve as a dessert on their own, or as a topping for pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, or ice cream.
  • Butter can be salted or unsalted; adjust added salt accordingly.
