Hanky Panky Appetizers are a delicious and easy-to-make party snack featuring a savory blend of ground beef, spicy sausage, and melted Velveeta cheese served on rye bread and broiled to bubbly perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Cheese Mixture

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 lb. ground hot sausage (such as Jimmy Dean or Bob Evans)
  • 1 lb. Velveeta cheese, cut into cubes
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • ½ teaspoon garlic salt
  • ½ teaspoon regular salt

Other

  • 1 loaf party rye bread
  • Chopped parsley (fresh or dried, optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Meat: Place the ground beef and ground hot sausage in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until browned and cooked through, breaking the meat up as it cooks.
  2. Prepare the Cheese: While the meat is cooking, cut the Velveeta cheese into cubes for easier melting.
  3. Drain Excess Grease: Once the meat is cooked, drain the majority of the grease from the pan. It doesn’t need to be completely grease-free, just remove most of it.
  4. Melt the Cheese: Add the Velveeta cubes to the cooked meat in the skillet and continue cooking until the cheese is fully melted and incorporated with the meat.
  5. Season the Mixture: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, oregano, garlic salt, and regular salt thoroughly to flavor the mixture.
  6. Preheat the Broiler: Set your oven’s broiler to high to prepare for toasting the appetizers.
  7. Assemble the Appetizers: Line a baking sheet with slices of party rye bread. Place a 2-tablespoon scoop of the meat and cheese mixture onto each slice.
  8. Broil: Broil the appetizers for 2–3 minutes, until hot and bubbly. Watch carefully to avoid burning. Alternatively, you can bake them at 350°F for 15–18 minutes if you prefer not to use the broiler.
  9. Garnish and Serve: If desired, sprinkle the baked appetizers with fresh or dried chopped parsley before serving. Enjoy immediately!

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of hot sausage according to your preferred spice level.
  • Keep a close eye while broiling to prevent the bread or cheese from burning.
  • Velveeta cheese provides a creamy texture and smooth melt; you can substitute with other processed cheese if desired.
  • These appetizers are best served hot for optimal texture and flavor.
  • To make ahead, prepare the meat and cheese mixture and refrigerate, assembling and broiling just before serving.
