Middle Eastern Kofta Bil Sanieh (Baked Kofta with Potatoes and Tomatoes)

- 1 lb ground beef or lamb
- 1 small onion, grated
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 3 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into wedges
- 2 large tomatoes, chopped
- 1 small green bell pepper or chili pepper
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 cup water
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped parsley for garnish
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a bowl, mix all kofta ingredients: ground meat, grated onion, garlic, parsley, allspice, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Shape into oval patties.
- Lightly brown kofta in a skillet or broil for 5–6 minutes to seal the outside.
- In a separate pan, sauté potato wedges in olive oil until golden. Remove and set aside.
- In a baking dish, layer kofta patties, sautéed potatoes, chopped tomatoes, onions, and green pepper.
- In a small bowl, whisk together tomato paste, water, salt, and pepper. Pour the mixture evenly over the baking dish contents.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 35 minutes.
- Remove foil and continue baking uncovered for 15–20 minutes until tender and slightly browned.
- Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot.
Notes
- You can substitute lamb with beef or use a mix of both.
- Adjust spices to your preference; cumin or paprika can be added.
- Serve with rice, flatbread, or a green salad for a complete meal.
