Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 6 to 8 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces

Crust

  • 1 homemade or store-bought pie crust (top and bottom)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) to ensure it’s hot enough for the initial baking stage which helps set the crust quickly.
  2. Prepare Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced Granny Smith apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, all-purpose flour, and a pinch of salt. Toss thoroughly to ensure the apples are evenly coated with the mixture.
  3. Prepare Bottom Crust: Roll out the bottom pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie pan, trimming any excess crust that hangs over the edges to create a neat base.
  4. Add Filling: Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading it out evenly. Dot the filling with small pieces of butter to add richness and enhance flavor as it bakes.
  5. Add Top Crust: Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the apple filling. Seal the edges by crimping them with your fingers or a fork to prevent leaks. Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.
  6. Bake Pie: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake at 425°F (220°C) for 15 minutes. Then, reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35 to 45 minutes until the apples are tender and the crust turns a golden brown color.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack. Cooling helps the filling to set, making it easier to slice and serve your delicious apple pie.

Notes

  • Use Granny Smith apples for their tartness and firm texture, which holds up well during baking.
  • For a shinier crust, you can brush the top crust with an egg wash before baking.
  • If the crust edges start to brown too much during baking, cover them with foil to prevent burning.
  • Allow the pie to cool for at least 2 hours for the filling to set properly.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
